If you’re reading this article on “What Is a PRI”, it’s probably because you just entered the ‘very confusing’ world of telecommunications, where knowing all of the acronyms is a sales persons ‘right to passage’.

So, don’t get confused, but here are just some of the things that you’re going to hear; DID, DOD, ISDN, VoIP, ACD, SMDR, PSTN, PBX, and the list can just go on for pages and pages. It’ll make you think understanding a child with ADD and OCD is a breeze!

So, I am here to take out all of the ‘high tech’ talk and just simply explain to you exactly ‘What Is a PRI’ in plain easy to understand English.   For additional information you can click What Is a PRI.

A PRI at its basic level is the ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) equivalent of a T1 circuit.

In other words, to understand a PRI , just think of it as ’24 things’.  Those things can be; telephone lines, fax lines, a modem, Internet service, video, a VoIP phone, etc.

What is a PRI circuit that is used for voice:  If you are utilizing a PRI 100% for phone service, afterwards you will get 23 phone lines which can all be used concurrently (called ‘B’ channels), and the 24th line (termed a ‘D’ channel) is employed for signaling information (guaranteeing that once someone hangs up - the line disconnects and is free to be used immediately) and distinctive features, like; caller ID, DID (Direct Inward Dialing), that allows a telephone number to bypass the Operator, or voice mail system and goes immediately to a specific person or a department, such as sales or service.

What is a PRI circuit that is used for data:  A PRI has a speed of 1.544 Mbps when it is used 100% for data, and each individual channel (of which there are 24) has a speed of 64 Kbps.

What is a PRI circuit that is used for both voice and data:The nice thing about a PRI circuit is its flexibility  Therefore, if you remember our original statement from above that a PRI is ’24 things’, it is possible to set it up your circuit in a variety of ways.  For instance, you could have a PRI that has 12 circuits for voice, providing you 12 concurrent telephone calls, and 12 circuits for data, providing you a speed of roughly 768 Kbps which may be used for Internet service.  For far more comprehensive info on PRI circuit configurations you can go to What Is a PRI Line.

So, you can see it is seriously not that complicated.  In reality, a PRI can be applied in a variety of techniques that can actually benefit your company, each in efficiency and a true cost savings for your business.
